As a registered dietitian, I specialize in primary and secondary disease prevention.
Primary prevention is the attempt to prevent a certain disease from developing in the first place while secondary prevention is the lifestyle changes that can take place in order to reduce risk of further damage in relation to a disease.
Through studying metabolism, systems of the body, chemistry, biology and food science, it became clear to me that many diseases can be prevented and treated through a healthy dietary intake and physical activity. In university, I decided that I wanted to work as a consulting dietitian where I can help others discover a dietary lifestyle that is optimal for their individual needs.
I do not believe that there is one diet or style of dietary intake that is better than the others. Daily intake and nutrient needs are based on age, gender, culture, height, weight, activity level, work schedules, intolerance, allergies, diseases states or conditions as well as lifestyle choices and motivations. As a healthcare professional, I converse with each client, one-on-one, in order to find out as much as I can about their lifestyle choices, dietary needs and concerns as well as wellness goals. I take everything into consideration when it comes to developing meal plans, resources and recipes that are used in order to optimize the dietary intake and overall health of the client.
I chose this profession in order to carry the message of wellness to others, in individual and group settings, in cooking classes and Lunch & Learns, etc.
I envision a Halifax where we are all committed to being healthy, active and in control of our own wellness.
